A lifelong LGBTQ community ally Aliza has been a lifelong ally of the LGBTQ community. In 2004, she became instrumental in the movement for same-sex marriage when then Mayor of New Paltz, NY, Jason West, became the first mayor on the East Coast to publicly go against George Bush's efforts to amend the Constitution to make it illegal. West's defiance of Bush's attempts started a regional, then national wave of mayors following suit after he solemnized twenty-six same-sex marriages in one day on national television. | After the marriages made international news, every LGBTQ couple in the region wanted to get "Married in New Paltz." Aliza became the official wedding coordinator and helped found the New Paltz Equality Initiative with Billiam Van Roestenberg and other community leaders. They assisted in helping hundreds of LGBTQ couples get married and Aliza was even the official wedding singer. |
"Behind Your Eyes"
'Behind Your Eyes' is about stretching ourselves to see through the eyes of another -- to expand our minds with curiosity rather than fear, with hope rather than hate. It's about questioning our limited perspectives and opening our minds to new possibilities while realizing that things don't always have to be seen in black and white. | In times like these, when divisiveness has become normalized, we need to emphasize the basic human values of kindness, empathy, and compassion. Now, more than ever, we need to find ways to build bridges rather than burn them. The video features modern improvisational dance by queer artist, Mak Nova, and portrays the symbolism of seeing through the eyes of "the other." |
