Documentarian of Portland, Oregon's first mural dedicated to the Queer community
Devin Boss, I was born and raised in Northeast Portland. I’m a director and the owner of North East Productions. North East Productions creates documentaries and short films that explore culture and the profoundly complex lives of individuals.
His company recently won two Telly Awards for social impact & short-form broadcast documentary, as well as the best short documentary award at Portland Film Fest. They approach is very heart-centered, and seeks to identify and underscore the human qualities that drive each subject. More importantly than any of that, is their dedication to inclusivity and increased narrative autonomy for Black and Brown people.

In 2019, Zoe Piliafas noticed that the progressive city of Portland, Oregon - long known to be a welcoming place for the LGBTQIA+ community - didn't have any public art specifically for the Queer community. So she formed a production team with local artist Cassandra Swan, project manager Ruban Lawrence, and Pride Northwest to try to create this - and so was the genesis of the "Never Look Away" mural. This film is a story of the efforts to get the 3-storey high mural in downtown Portland, Oregon made, and of the decades of resistance that lead to this monumental moment in history for the Queer community. You'll learn about the Queer community's history, you'll witness how a massive piece of public art goes from being an idea, to existing in front of your very eyes. You'll see how public art is a way of staking out a share of public space - of saying to the world, "We exist, and we have a right to exist." And you'll see how an idea, a small group of regular people, and a whole lot of community support can make anything happen. |
