"River" Filmmaker: Rafal Sokolowski

Award-winning film and theater director

Rafal Sokolowski is an award-winning film and theater director. His films are screened around the world and are supported by Telefilm Canada, the National Film Board of Canada, the Canada and Ontario Arts Councils, and the Canadian Film Centre.


He is the Artistic Director of Light Pipe Productions developing and producing narrative films. His latest feature, 22 Chaser premiered in Toronto where it won the Writer’s Guild of Canada Best Feature Screenplay Award and was acclaimed one of the best Canadian films of the year.

The film was produced by Don Carmody (Chicago) and Daniel Bekerman (The Witch) and starred Brian J. Smith (Sense8), Raoul Trujillo (Sicario), and John Kapelos (The Breakfast Club).


It was released theatrically across US and Canada by Gravitas Ventures and is currently available on several streaming channels including Amazon Prime, Paramount+, AppleTV, and others. Rafal’s new feature screenplay, The Farm won the 2023 UFVA Best Feature Screenplay Award and is currently optioned for production in 2025



"River" Synopsis

River, a trans woman estranged from her family, returns home to attend her father's funeral. She is anxious to see her mother, but nothing can prepare her for the extraordinary reunion.
